How to Choose a Primary Care Physician

In order to find a doctor, you need to really pound the pavement. This means that you need to search far and wide. When it comes down to it, this will be your primary care physician. Not only will he or she be completing basic physicals – your physician will also be the person you want to call when you are having medical issues and need questions answered right away. The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of avenues you can take for choosing a physician, but you really want to streamline things if you don’t want to spend a long time searching. If you don’t streamline and create deadlines, it will be more and more difficult to choose someone. Here is how to choose a primary care physician.

  1. Make sure to start with your health insurance plan – there is a good chance that you will have a number of in-network and out-of-network physicians. If you want your care to be subsidized or taken care of by your insurance company, you want to find a doctor that is within your network. It could be twice, three times or even four times more money if you go with an out-of-network doctor.
  2. Make sure that you ask friends and family members for references – for instance, you may get a name like Paulraj Samuel, M.D. It is up to you to meet the doctor and really get a sense of what he or she is like. The idea is to get a long list and then do all of your own research. Through this search, you will mostly likely be able to narrow things down to a few promising contenders. It is then up to you to do some background checks and vetting.
  3. Make sure that each of the doctors has a good review from other patients – it isn’t like visiting a new restaurant or trying out a product, so you will get a lot of reviews that go over personal experiences. Some doctors may have certain practices that you don’t like. If this is the case, you may want to move on. However, if the consensus is that other patients aren’t satisfied, you may want to move on and try another physician.
  4. Make sure that your doctor is close to you – no one wants to drive a hundred miles out of their way to get to the doctor’s office. Of course, if you live in a more remote part of the country, you may have to wait, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can also find doctors who take appointments over video chat – it may be a little awkward at first, but it can be incredibly convenient.
  5. Make sure that you meet with the physician face to face – ideally, you want to get along with your physician. The last thing you want is to go to your doctor’s office and not feel comfortable. This will be your primary doctor after all. In the end, a simple face-to-face will do the trick.
